When Christie’s Mom brought her to Children’s Relief Nursery two years ago, she was walking but not talking and didn’t know how to relate to other people. For her first 18 months she had been isolated and under-stimulated at home. Christie needed the Therapeutic Classrooms to help develop her ability to speak, to play and to interact. Now nearly four years old, Christie can say simple statements and has developed into a nurturing playmate, often helping others resolve conflicts. But she’s still not ready for Head Start, the usual next step after a child grows out of Children’s Relief Nursery programs.
Like the children we serve, Children’s Relief Nursery is Growing Up and Growing Out. We have expanded our programs to serve 4-year-olds like Christie. We’ve also expanded our service area to include the neighborhood just East of I-5 between Lombard and Killingsworth. We’re grateful to the State of Oregon and other funding sources for supporting this growth, and we look forward to sharing more about it in the future!
It was a lovely afternoon on July 19th when friends gathered to taste wine and raise money for Children’s Relief Nursery. Board Vice President Judy Edwards once again opened up her home to host the annual event, and guests paid to taste wines from Elk Cove Vineyards, Duck Pond Winery and Italian varieties. Between the great food, wine sales and wonderful conversation, $7,000 was raised to support the Nursery’s expansion.

Thanks to volunteers from the Cascade Artisans Guild, this beautiful mural creates a mood of movement and melody in our new Music and Art Room. We are grateful to Carolyn Johnson-Bell and her team of artists for creating and producing this stunning work.
The Music/Art room is a dedicated space for children to explore their creative side, stretch their imaginations, create music and dance with abandon. Our on-staff art therapist, staff with training in Music Together, and volunteers are planning special experiences for both children and parents. We’ll share samples of their work in coming months!
One service we provide to our families is a Clothes Closet full of every imaginable item they might need for their children. Most of the items are used, some new, and a very special few are handmade by Evelyn Lanfri, a long-time friend of the Nursery. All year long, she selects fabric, modifies patterns and produces the most beautiful children’s clothing. We are grateful to Evelyn and her sons for their support of our families.

Children's Relief Nursery (CRN) works with children in the first, most important years of life. Our mission is to prevent abuse and neglect in children birth through four by partnering with caregivers committed to strengthening their families. Education for parents and relief for families under stress promote healthier solutions. Since 2001, CRN has provided family support services at no cost to high risk Multnomah county families. We are building a community where children are safe.
